Better than free…
There is a lot of discussion around Digital Rights Management (DRM) in the music industry, a couple of week ego the president of Apple, Inc., Steve Jobs wrote his thoughts on music and cause everyone to start talking about it. Whether or not adding DRM to different media sounds right to you, I guess that our multimedia world is changes and we must accept some changes even if we don’t agree with them. With that said, I vote for DRM free media.
But what is the discussion really about, some groups in Europe are asking apple to open their DRM restrict business to other portable players or is it opening the player to non-DRM media? I don’t get it, if I go to a store and purchase a music CD, rip it on my computer and transfer that to my iPod, that music has no DRM at all.
So why people that don’t want their content to have any DRM, just go ahead and purchase CD’s only. I know that I can’t purchase music on some digital stores and transfer those to my iPod, “easily”, or buy iTunes music and put it on a Zen, but who would want to anyway?
You wouldn’t buy a CD to try to play it on a cassette deck player, this whole thing makes no sense. If you want your music on a player that is not an iPod just don’t buy it from iTunes. The industry is firing back to Apple, Inc. president, stating that his arguments are not tuned with the way the industry is fighting piracy.
All mayor record labels are inclined to have DRM on all their media, and this goes to Music, Movies, TV Shows and almost everything that you can find on iTunes except for podcasts. While not all media are consumed the say way, I think DRM on my music is not a big deal.
While most of us still debating on how we want our content here are some tips to keep your media safe and available when you need it. Back up everything, I know that music and video can cause space issues in whatever the medium for backup you are using try always to have a full backup of your media. Research about your media before buying it, decide if you want to listen to it or watch it on you TV, iPod or other device.
