Diffusers and Reflectors

There are many reasons why you may want to carry a diffuser or a reflector when takingWestcott #301 Photo Basics 40 pictures outdoors, if you plan to take portrait photos most likely you will need them. When doing photography outdoors under the sun is when diffusers and deflectors come in handy. The sun can be your allied and your enemy at the same time, there are a wide variety of deflectors and diffusers available but you must know which one is the right for you.

reflectorsIf you are looking at taking portrait photos, portable reflectors are the best; they come in different sizes and colors. Photoflex at http://www.photoflex.com has some of the more inexpensive ones that are a great bang for the buck. You can make deflectors out of any material like white cardboard box, but these professional ones fold to fit the palm of your hand, can’t beat that convenience. Reflectors help eliminate unwanted shadows from the subject you are photographing. Another trick to soothe the sunlight is to hold translucent reflectors on top of the subject, but combined with a white reflector under the face of the subject helps getting the best shot.

There are reflectors for use in a studio environment; these ones can be use if you do a lot of photography indoors. For a photography enthusiast having a little bit of everything helps, there are some reflectors that can be used outdoors and have the option todiffusers attached it onto a tripod to be used in a studio/indoors environment. More experience photographer use reflectors in the shape of an umbrella, usually to control the reflection of the flash.

Diffusers are not so different from reflectors, like the translucent reflector, the material of the diffuser helps spreading the light on the subject. By softening the light you can achieve some photography tricks like soft shadows on angle photos. This technique allows you to give different perspective to your photography, balancing the light on your subjects allows you to create better photography. In summary, diffusers spread and soften light and a reflector, well, a reflector reflects or modify the light source.
