Podcast Junkie
Recently I got so out of control with my podcast subscriptions that I had to erase them all and start over. I’m not talking about issues with iTunes, the main problem is that I subscribed to too many of them. The ones that I was really behind were the video ones, I was watching almost 4 different shows of Photoshop alone. Some tech shows were easy to let go, since most of the time they start sounding too repetitive. Finally, I decided to clear out all my iTunes podcast library and start subscribing to my favorite show one at a time to make sure I have enough time to watch them all.
So I decided to put together a small list of tips for not to be a Podcast Junkie:
- Define your passions, don’t subscribe to podcasts just because someone said is good.
- If you like to try out podcasts, download the most recent show without subscribing.
- If you have two podcast with the same topic, try your best to choose a favorite.
- Familiarize yourself with your podcast management software.
- Keep in mind the size of your portable player so you don’t overload it.
- Value your time and make use of it wisely.
Other considerations to manage your podcast library, for example, some podcasters have multiple versions of their show available. If you only listen to a show and don’t pay attention to the album art or chapter selection try to go with an MP3 file if available. If you only watch your video podcast on your portable device, like an iPod, make sure you are downloading the correct version. Some video podcasters provide us with the iPod version, AppleTV version, Large/Small versions, and even Sony PSP versions.
Another podcast management solution that iTunes let us manage is the option to load on our iPod only the shows that we tell it to load. You can manually select which podcast to update so that you can then watch the other ones on your Mac or PC. What do you think? Are these tips and recommendation adapting to the real world.
