One iMac, With Everything, To Go Please.
After waking up from a deep pleasant dream where I was using one of the new iMacs to write a post, I started planning my purchase. Then I started thinking about waiting until Leopard’s launch, that along will save me about $129.00. What would you do? I have a PPC MacMini and a Windows XP machine that is mostly used by my wife. I’m looking to merge these two with the use of Parallels, but as of today, my MacMini is working fine. Should I wait then?
The new 20 inch entry level iMac sports a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which compared to my 1.5 PPC G4 is smoking fast. 1GB of 667 MHz DDR2 memory that is twice what I have, and it comes on one SO-DIMM, which makes it super easy to upgrade to two. A 250GB hard drive giving me 68% more room to store all my photos and videos leaving my external drive available to use with Leopard’s Time Machine. I’m using my PC to record DVDs as my PPC G4 MacMini has only a combo drive, the new iMac sports a DVD writer across the board.
I’m using a fairly new 15-inch flat panel LCD monitor that by no means can compare to the gorgeous 20-inch wide screen monitor that the new iMac has. While I don’t use the Airport Extreme capabilities of my MacMini is nice to know that the new iMac has 802.11n as oppose to “g” on my MacMini. I will be trading an ATI Radeon 9200 64MB graphics card for an ATI Radeon HD with 128MB of GDDR3 memory, nice. A couple extras are the iSight, which would replace a Camcorder that I use for video chat with iChat, and the fact that I don’t have Front Row will give me one extra thing to brag about with my friends.
Overall, I’m not trying to compare both Macs, but to decide if is worth it to wait until Leopard. I don’t have the need right now for a new Mac, but I’m in love with the new iMac. iLife ‘08 has me worried with the new iMovie, but I haven’t even see it in action yet, and I’m not too crazy about the keyboard but I’m willing to give it a try. What would you do? I’ll be getting rid of my MacMini so by then I will only have one Mac, so getting Leopard just for the fun of it is not fun at all. The only thing the wait would do for me is to give me chance to save some more so that I don’t have to charge it to my credit card. What would you do?
