That Junk Email Going Around The Office

Have you ever find yourself passing over an email with some exciting news that turns out to be false? That very same thing happened to me last week when a co-worker forwards me an email with news about changes in the state’s traffic law. I asked her who the sender was; she told me that her aunt did. I gave it credibility and immediately created a post with the news item.

My mistake, I’m not blaming my co-worker for giving me false information; I blame myself for falling into this old trick. Immediately I saw a jump in my website traffic stats, a big one I must add. One of my readers advised me of the fake news items; actually this type of email has been around with different states on it. I immediately advise everyone of the false news article and hopefully no one else will be fooled.

I started thinking of the fragility of the situation and came out with some tips for everyone to make sure that this does not happen to you. In an office environment is easy to fall into this kind of mistakes because often we trust the people we work with. When receiving an email with any kind of news is wise to do some Google search for the article, also be suspicious of any news items that do not have any links to the source. As a blogger I think that more research would have prevented this, keep your sources of information in one place.

Do not blame your co-workers for bogus news items; remember that they may be fooled too. There is no way of keeping your co-workers from sending you stuff like this, you may want just to ignore the email just to keep yourself from being considered rude. Be polite, remember that this people you work with and you don’t want to create an uncomfortable environment. Have you had any experience like this one? If so, how did you resolve it?
