Apple Mighty Mouse Review
Let’s summarize this review on the first paragraph, I don’t know why I waited so long, I regret not buying one before. If you don’t have one and you need a new mouse give Apple Mighty Mouse a try, you won’t regret it. When I got my first Mac, over two year ago, I was using a wireless Microsoft mouse, it worked fine with my Mac mini until it broke. A key got loose or something, I try to open it to fix it and that was the death of it.
After that mouse I got a Logitech mouse, which was not wireless but only lasted like 9 months, it started double-clicking whenever I was trying to single-click. I looked over Logitech forums and apparently this is a flaw in Logitech’s hardware. I went my local Target store and grab one of those mini Microsoft mouse that can holds the transmitter under the mouse for easy travel, it drove me crazy, I blame it this time on the many wireless stuff I have sitting on my desk.
Finally, I read all the reviews on the Mighty Mouse on Apple.com and decided to give it a try, boy why I waited. I’m not saying that this is the perfect mouse, it still has some room for improvements, but it certainly works better than any of the other mouse I had before it.
The first thing I liked is that is an Apple brand and it works great with my Mac mini, its white which holds that Apple design beauty we are all so use to. The cable itself is kind of short, but if you use your mouse close to your keyboard (Apple brand keyboard) this should not be a problem. The scrolling key works fantastically, in fact is the best scrolling wheel I’ve used and its very accurate.
The button-less design is something you have to get use to, you can’t right-click unless you lift your finger from the left-button area. This is because is doesn’t really have buttons, but sensors, small tiny sensors detect whether your finger is in the left position, right position, or even in the middle of them which then interprets the click as a click-wheel click.
This is why people can’t find it useful, we are used to feeling the buttons and laying our fingers on our mouse, disregarding the click intentions. Test it on your closest Apple store, try to right-click while laying a finger in the left position, the click will automatically default to a single-click. Another feature is that by holding the sides of the mouse and squeezing it gently will activate expose for you, if you set it up to do that. You can of course change the setting to do whatever you need.
The problem some people complain about with the squeezing feature is that it triggers unintentionally, I’m thinking that maybe is an effect on time, my mouse is new so I don’t have this problem. The last feature, that I partly mentioned already, is the click-wheel button, you can trigger an action like activate Dashboard by pushing the click-wheel button. This is not a real button, but a simulated action that comes as a result of clicking without any finger in the right or left sensors of the mouse.
From that you can tell how Apple put a lot of though in creating this mouse, yet many people complain about it. I have to be honest, the mouse is not for everyone, one of the biggest complaints I have is the continuous selection problem you will encounter if you run out of space on your desk.
Let me explain, the click functions is layout under the mouse, if you are making a big selection and you lift your mouse to have more room, you will loose traction and you will have to start over. This is not convenient at all, I wish Apple works on this soon. The quality of the craftsmanship is awesome, I have no other complaints and while I’ve used it only for over a month and don’t think my opinion will change any time soon.
