iPhone 3G and GPS

I bought my first iPhone on September last year, right after the price drop, my mobile experience changed amazingly. I was able to find places, get to places and discover places better than ever, and that was without any GPS. I was able to get in touch with people no matter where I was, and this was a big deal to me.

I never owned a “smart phone” before my iPhone and I was having a good time, then the 3G came around with lots of new smart ways to do things. I bought my iPhone 3G next day it was released, that Saturday I made a 4 hour line until I got my very own new iPhone. Hours earlier I sold my original iPhone for $150, so I only spent another $50 on the new phone.

A couple of weeks have passed and the only feature I miss is battery life, I had to buy a car charger, and an extra wall charger to carry with me all the time. I use every single feature, but mostly the GPS on Google Maps and the web, NetNewsWire, etc. My iPhone now crashes more than my previous one, and I’m not sure is because the new third party apps.

I found that whenever I try to do multiple things at the same time it crashes on me, there is something wrong with the OS inside my 3G iPhone. I try restoring it several times with out any luck, so I’m just waiting on the next update. Until then I have a couple tips on using the GPS that might shed some light to some of you.

Trust the GPS but acknowledge that it has limits, directions are always preselected for you, without the option to change routes. With this in mind, remember that the software has a limited usability, one time I try to search for an address and it kept giving me whatever I search for before that one time.

The blue dot that comes when the GPS is active, is not as accurate as you may think but if you feel that is throwing you off route more than often, I found that turning off and on your phone fix it immediately. Once in awhile my iPhone maps application has a problem with East vs. West when giving me directions.

The latest rumors about iPhone software talks about the possibility of turn by turn navigation for iPhone software 2.1, until then I will keep using my GPS but being careful that I don’t end up in the opposite site of the city.
